From Lawn to Living - How One Family Created Their Ultimate Backyard

Before the transformation, the space was a traditional Perth backyard with established lawn, mature trees, garden beds and an enclosed alfresco off the third bedroom. Lovely in its own right, but not quite the family entertainer’s paradise this family had in mind.

The decision was made to open up the area entirely and reimagine what the space could become – a resort-style retreat designed for family life at every stage.

With young children in the mix, visibility and safety were front of mind. The family wanted a pool area that could be watched easily from the entertaining space, with plenty of zones for seating, play and relaxation.

The solution was installing the pool lower than the alfresco level, creating a natural noise and splash barrier while maintaining a clear sightline from the entertaining area. Functional, beautiful and brilliantly considered.

“We wanted a pool area that was visible from the entertaining area with many areas and zones for seating, designed to suit young children right through to teenagers and young adults.”

Backyard transformation

The decision to go fibreglass was straightforward as speed of installation and minimal disruption were priorities for a busy family. But the family also wanted the aesthetic of a concrete pool without the wait.

The solution was a fibreglass pool finished with waterline tiles, delivering a sleek, concrete-like appearance with all the benefits of fibreglass. The colour chosen was fresh and modern, giving the pool a contemporary edge that ties the entire outdoor space together beautifully.

No renovation is without its challenges, and this project had its share. Water, gas, and main lines ran vertically through the middle of the proposed pool area, a discovery that could have derailed the entire timeline. Fortunately, it didn’t.

Site Supervisor Luke stepped up in a way that left the family genuinely impressed. Sourcing a plumber on the day of the dig and coordinating the team to stay on site while the replumbing was completed, Luke kept the installation on schedule without missing a beat.

The team also navigated large established trees, existing fence lines, alfresco height considerations and a sewer line running along the rear of the property, all managed with precision and professionalism.

“Luke our site supervisor was exceptional, he made the pool process seamless. The team were excellent in working with the fences, heights and the existing sewer line.”

Once the pool was in, the transformation really came to life. A talented team of tradespeople worked together to complete the vision, including beautiful paving, a platform and seating area outside the third bedroom and long steps with a curved platform connecting the alfresco to the pool level. The result is a space that flows seamlessly from inside to outside and invites you to linger.

What was once a quiet backyard lawn is now the heart of this family’s home. It’s a beautifully designed, multi-zone outdoor living space that works just as well for a relaxed Tuesday afternoon as it does for a full weekend of entertaining.

The girls have their pool. The parents have their entertaining space. And everyone has a backyard they never want to leave.
